Snapping turtle!

Last weekend I was at a park with the family and we spotted a huge snapping turtle swimming in a lake:

It kept swimming back and forth under the little footbridge, popping up on one side, and then the other, always with the stick and leaf on its back.

Look at its tail! Straight from the age of the dinosaurs with those spikes down its length.

It’s a bit hard to see in the picture but a school of minnows followed the turtle wherever it went.

I did a quick search to see if any behavioural research has been done on snapping turtles, but I didn’t find anything. And I’m not sure to what extent we can generalize behavioural research on other species of turtles to snapping turtles…

But one thing was for sure: It was a nice day to be drifting along in the water!
